Furness Vale History Society
Furness Vale Local History Society meets on Tuesday 3rd September at 7.30pm. The guest speaker will be Peter Braun, a National Trust volunteer on the subject of “Dunham Massey Hall”,the former home of the Earls of Stamford. Held at Furness Vale Community Centre, Yeardsley Lane, admission is £1 including refreshments.
I have been researching family history for around 14 years now. The very first day of researching I found my great great grandfather was a John Waring born around 1803. His later family lived in Herefordshire, including my own father Thomas Palmer Waring. So naturally it is assumed that is where John came from. However have continued to draw blanks on this one and in the past has been a strong mormon connection. John was listed as being born at Furness but there is no such place in Herefordshire. An aunt recently stated that the Waring’s had connection to Nelson in Lancs but drew blanks there. I am now wondering if it could have been Furness Vale. My question is where do I start to look for older records from this area. At one time it was easier to locate but everything seems to come under ancestry these days. I wonder if someone could point me in the right direction please to old records. It is a myth that families stayed in one area. Two of John’s sons travelled to America as Mormons and his daughter went to Australia before America. So I want to widen my horizons to find him.

Patricia. I have looked at the Disley.net website which has census records for 1841 covering Furness Vale but there is no Waring. I do not have access to anything earlier. This village was at that time part of Cheshire and many local records are held at Chester. It is most likely though, that Furness refers to the Furness Peninsular in Lancashire, the area around Barrow in Furness.
